Prince Harry and Meghan Markle honored Princess Diana’s memory by planting her favorite flowers at a Los Angeles preschool on the 23rd anniversary of her death, Monday.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex joined children and teachers at the Preschool Learning Center in L.A. for the heartfelt gesture, as they planted baby blue forget-me-nots in a garden and watered them with with elephant-shaped cans.
They also joined the young students at the learning center — which is just a few blocks from where LA-native Meghan attended middle and high school — in planting petunias, California wildflowers, tomatoes, squash and sweet peas.
“Meghan had dirt all over her hands and on her jeans by the end and Harry was covered in water after an impromptu water fight with some of the kids. They were all having a ball,” a source said. “The kids love story time with Harry and Meghan. They were all raising their hands and participating.”
The couple, who recently moved to Santa Barbara with their 1-year-old son Archie, has previously volunteered at the preschool, which educates underprivileged kids.
“The children were so excited to see Meghan and Harry again because they’ve had so much fun with them in the past,” said the source. “Everyone got their hands dirty digging holes for the new plants and seeds and making sure they were secure with enough soil.”
Meghan, who wore her go-to Rothy’s flats for the casual outing, and Harry also spent some time reading books to the children.
Preschool Learning Center is a program of the Assistance League of Los Angeles, which aims to improve the lives of impoverished children in the community through philanthropy, dedicated service and compassionate programs.
Harry has frequently honored his mother’s memory through her favorite flower. Days after Meghan and Harry’s son Archie was born, they shared a photo of his feet in front of the bloom, and Harry’s charity African charity Sentebale is named after the flower, while Meghan also included forget-me-nots in her bouquet on her wedding day in May 2018.
