For Prince Harry, life is like the “The Truman Show.”
The renegade royal compared being a member of his famous family to being a character in the 1998 Jim Carrey film, when asked in a new interview to describe the feeling of having his every move “watched by millions.”
“Yep, it’s a mix between ‘The Truman Show’ and living in a zoo,” Harry told host Dax Shepard on Thursday’s episode of his “Armchair Expert” podcast.
In the movie, Carrey’s character Truman Burbank’s entire existence has been televised through hidden cameras, and everyone in his life is a hired actor.
Shepard then asked if life as a royal was like living in a cage, to which Harry responded, “It’s the job right? Grin and bear it. Get on with it.”
He continued, “I was in my early 20s and I was thinking, ‘I don’t want this job, I don’t want to be here.'”
He pointed out how he doesn’t want his pregnant wife Meghan Markle and their son Archie to go through what his mom Princess Diana went through as a royal.
“I don’t want to be doing this. Look what it did to my mum, how am I ever going to settle down and have a wife and family when I know it’s going to happen again,” he said. “I’ve seen behind the curtain, I’ve seen the business model and seen how this whole thing works and I don’t want to be part of this.”
He also revealed during the interview that he and Meghan once met up at a grocery store at the beginning of their relationship.
Meghan and Harry moved to California last year after resigning from the British Royal family.
Harry’s sit-down with Shepard follows his other bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in March, where Meghan revealed she struggled with her mental health and that members of the royal family had “concerns” about Archie’s skin color.
Since Megxit, the duo has been busy building a new empire, signing a podcast deal with Spotify, and inking a production deal with Netflix.
Markle has also published her first children’s book, for which she received a $700,000 advance.
They got married in May 2018 and share 2-year-old son Archie. They are also expecting a baby girl.
