If you think Kanye West‘s sandals look strange, blame it on ancient Japanese tradition.
After the rapper, 41, sported a pair of seemingly too-small Yeezy slippers ($150) with socks to his friend 2Chainz’s Miami wedding last week, West became a target for memes and mockery alike.
Even his wife, Kim Kardashian, joined the fun, posting a video of West wearing yet another pair of the shoes on her Instagram. “The real question is, do those fit?” Kardashian can be heard saying as she zooms in on his footwear, laughing. “That’s what everyone wants to know. What size are those?”
But West may be onto something with his sized-down sandals.
On Tuesday, the rapper tweeted a photo of a T-shirt made by fashion Instagram account Diet Prada that pokes fun at the footwear, then followed up with some education and an explanation. The proper method for wearing sandals, the star posited, is “the Japanese way,” with the wearer’s heel hanging slightly off the back of the shoe.
No matter what size sandals you choose, West is laughing all the way to the bank: His much-maligned Yeezy design is now completely sold out.
