Matthew Perry’s drug addiction was so bad 10 years ago, his ex-lover claimed he would send her out to score him cocaine, heroin and crack because she was pregnant at the time and “No one’s going to pull over a pregnant girl. Don’t worry.”
Kayti Edwards, who stayed friends with the actor after they briefly dated in the 2000s, told The Sun newspaper that Perry – who has struggled with addiction for decades — hit a particularly rough patch in 2011 and said: “I was like five months pregnant going down and getting stuff for him. He [would say], ‘No one’s going to pull over a pregnant girl. Don’t worry.’”
Perry would set up the drug deal and Edwards would pick up the stash.
“We’d open the bag, sometimes it was pills, cocaine, sometimes it would be heroin and crack, it was just like a smorgasbord, you never knew what you were going to get,” Edwards told the paper.
Edwards claims she was merely trying to help the actor during those days and meet dealers to stop him from “wandering around the streets” himself and getting caught by police or paparazzi.
“I look back and think, ‘What kind of friend was I?’ [But] I wanted to help him,” Edwards told the Sun. “He’d give me this guilt trip like, ‘If you don’t get me this I’m just gonna go there myself and walk downtown’. I was like, ‘No, no, no, I’ll just do it for you’ because I didn’t want him in his state of mind to A, be driving, and B, be wandering around the streets… It was kind of weird, our relationship turned toxic. I couldn’t say no.”
But Perry also paid Edwards to get the drugs.
“I was making all this money,” she told the Sun. “I just had to drive, pick it up, bring it to him, boom, sometimes three times a day, sometimes I made like $3,000-$4,000 a day. He would always say to me, ‘Money is no object’. I was like, ‘Oh my God’.”
“Matthew could have retired years ago and he’d still be a millionaire, he’d always say, ‘I’m set for life’. But I think that he liked working.”
Post-“Friends,” Perry worked on the show “Mr. Sunshine” and would get Edwards to deliver illicit substances to him on set at Paramount Studios in Hollywood.
“I remember I would go to Paramount, up to the gate, and I’d say, ‘I’m here to see Matthew,’” Edwards told the paper. “I would drive through and he would just be in the trailer. I would think, ‘How can you be working right now? [But] he wasn’t a functioning addict, you could see all over his face, he wasn’t fooling anybody.”
“Mr. Sunshine,” which aired on ABC, was canceled after one season.
It was after this (and when his friends and “Friends” co-stars started distancing themselves from him) that Perry sought help.
“(His inner circle) didn’t want anything to do with him, he was kind of on the outs with them, only because they didn’t want to see him like that, it was really hard,” Edwards said. “His friends were doing fun stuff and hanging out, and he was never included because it was like, ‘How is Matthew going to show up?’ It was kind of embarrassing… There were times I’d be like, ‘How can somebody do this much stuff and not die’ … 80 Vicodin a day, that’s lethal.”
Perry did a third stint in rehab in May 2011 – the first two times were in 1997 and in 2001.
In between rehabs, Edwards says Perry would work hard to remain sober but there were always signs he was about to fall off the wagon.
“You can see signs beforehand with him, he would make jokes like, ‘Let’s go get some cocaine. What do you think about that? Ah, just kidding,’” Edwards told the Sun. “I was like, ‘Oh gosh, it’s in his head, he’s thinking about it.’”
Edwards says his addiction became so bad, Perry once superglued his hands to his legs while high.
Edwards found him in his house.
“His assistant was in the kitchen and she was on the phone,” Edwards said. “He was stuck on the couch with his hands super glued to his legs… Here I am with nail polish remover trying to get his hands unstuck. I was like, ‘What is (the assistant) doing?’ (Perry) said, ‘Oh, she’s calling rehab’. I was like, ‘Maybe that’s a good idea’.”
Perry then went over to his neighbor’s house and went swimming.
“His neighbor was like, ‘Matthew, you have a home bro.’ That was in Hollywood,” Edwards, who dated Perry before she met her (former) husband, recalled.
Perry is now sober and is now engaged to his girlfriend, literary manager Molly Hurwitz.
