Anne Hathaway: I don’t have a drinking problem, I have a hangover problem

Anne Hathaway is making it clear that she doesn’t have a drinking problem, but a hangover problem.

After she revealed in January that she’d given up booze, the “Princess Diaries” actress 36, explained her decision a bit further in a new magazine interview.

“I didn’t put [a drink] down because my drinking was a problem,” Hathaway explained in the cover story of Modern Luxury’s Boston Common magazine. “I put it down because the way I drink leads me to have hangovers and those were the problem.”

Hathaway admitted that her last night of drinking led to a five-day hangover — something that she said just can’t happen when she has her 3-year-old, Jonathan, to take care of.

“When I’m at a stage in my life where there is enough space for me to have a hangover, I’ll start drinking again, but that won’t be until my kid is out of the house,” she said, adding that her decision to give up alcohol is a personal one and that, “I don’t think drinking is bad” in general.

“It’s just the way I do it — which I personally think is really fun and awesome — is just not the kind of fun and awesome that goes with having a child for me,” she said.

During her January interview with Ellen DeGeneres about the subject, the “Oceans 8” star explained that she stopped drinking in October, recalling being too hungover for a morning school run.

“He’s getting to an age where he really does need me all the times in the morning,” she said. “I did one school run where I dropped him off at school, I wasn’t driving, but I was hungover and that was enough for me, I didn’t love that one.”

Hathaway shares Jonathan with husband Adam Shulman, whom she married in 2012.
