Sherri Shepherd cried for three years because of Barbara Walters

It’s Sherri Shepherd’s turn to talk about her experience on “The View.”

While the comedian and actress is written about in the explosive book “Ladies Who Punch: The Explosive Inside Story of ‘The View,’” she told Entertainment Tonight she’s thankful for her nearly nine years on the show, but it wasn’t all positive.

“I cried for three years straight because I had a very tough taskmaster, who I love her to death,” Shepherd, 51, said. “It’s Barbara Walters.”

“But Barbara Walters was tough on the people that she loved and she helped me find my voice,” she added. “So I will forever be indebted to Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar and Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Jenny McCarthy for the time that I had on ‘The View.’ What I have now is because of ‘The View.’”

In the last several weeks, excerpts of the book have been floating around detailing the turbulent waters between hosts — including O’Donnell and Hasselbeck and McCarthy and Walters.

“Everybody has their own filter,” Shepherd said. “When they were at ‘The View,’ some people had some not-so-great experiences, and some people had really wonderful experiences.”

Shepherd doesn’t plan on reading the book. She also said she was clever enough to keep some of her drama private.

“I’ll look at stuff that was negative, and how I turn it into a positive … Sometimes you have to go through difficult times and you have to fall in order to get back up, and be bright, and be great,” she said.
