Boxing champ sues promoter for failing to disclose profit from fights

Boxing champ Andre Ward has taken a swing at his longtime promoter Dan Goossen in federal court.

Super-middleweight champ and Olympic gold medalist Ward has sued Goossen in California for allegedly violating the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act, which requires promoters to disclose how much they make off fights to their clients.

“Even though Goossen has promoted [Ward] for nearly his entire 10-year professional career, and despite repeated requests by [Ward], Goossen failed in all instances to make any timely disclosures to [Ward] . . . for any of his fights from 2004 to 2012,” the suit claims, adding that in setting up a 2013 fight, Goossen’s disclosure to Ward was “woefully inadequate.”

The latest round between Ward and Goossen comes after Ward lost twice in arbitration before the California State Athletic Commission to invalidate his contract.

He also sued in California Superior Court. But Monday’s federal suit is seeking damages that could reach into the tens of millions.

A rep for Goossen didn’t return calls seeking comment.
