‘The Wire’ actor stabbed at DC nightclub

Actor Anwan Glover, known for his role in the television series “The Wire,” was stabbed in a District of Columbia nightclub early Sunday.

According to a police report, Glover reported that he was on the second floor of Cafe Asia, a restaurant at 1720 I St. NW, when an unknown person punched him. He turned to face his assailant and another person hit him on the back of the head, causing him to slip on the wet floor.

Glover said he was then kicked multiple times. He heard someone shout, “He has a knife!” and felt a sharp pain in his right side.

Glover was treated for a laceration on the right side of his torso at George Washington University Hospital.

Another assault was reported at the same club at 1:30 a.m., about 20 minutes before the attack on Glover. The victim of the first assault, a 37-year-old woman, told police she got into an argument with a man she did not know, and he punched her in the mouth. He was escorted out of the club.

Officer Paul Metcalf, a District of Columbia police spokesman, said he had no reason to believe the two incidents were related.

Glover, 41, who lives in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, played the tough gangster Slim Charles on “The Wire.” He most recently appeared in the Oscar-winning movie “12 Years a Slave.”

Off screen, Glover has participated in anti-violence campaigns and spoken about his personal encounters with violence.

As a youth in Washington’s Columbia Heights neighborhood, he reportedly was shot 13 times. His brother died in a shooting in the District of Columbia in 2007, and his son was wounded in a shooting at a party in 2011.

Glover plays in a musical group, the Backyard Band, which performed Saturday at the 2014 Summer Spirit Festival at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland.

Glover’s manager said the actor remained hospitalized Sunday.
