Nicki Minaj: Iggy Azalea slight is the media’s creation

Blame the media.

After allegedly slighting fellow BET Award nominee Iggy Azalea on Sunday, Nicki Minaj defended her comments on Twitter Wednesday.

“The media puts words in my mouth all the time and this is no different,” Minaj, 31, said at the beginning of her seven-tweet spree. “I will always take a stance on women writing b/c I believe in us!”

While accepting her award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist at the BET Awards, Minaj told the audience, “What I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj is when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it.”

Though she didn’t mention anyone by name, it was clear to many whom Minaj was talking about. Her fellow nominees were Azalea, Eve, Angel Haze and Charli Baltimore. Azalea has, as other publications have pointed out, long been rumored to have used ghostwriters throughout her career.

The “Pills n Potions” rapper called for unity among female artists, using Lauryn Hill and Missy Elliott as examples of those who inspire her.
