Denzel Washington surprised students in the August Wilson Monologue Competition when he appeared to say he’d personally give each of the 24 finalists $1,000.
Judges at the August Wilson Theatre included Pauletta Washington and Stephen McKinley Henderson, who starred with Denzel in Wilson’s play “Fences.”
The students were competing for scholarships and cash prizes. Washington said of his gift,“just don’t spend it all tonight.”
The winner was Boston student Ashley Herbert.
