US ambassador to Spain James Costos unveiled the new design of the American Embassy in Madrid on Friday night.
The residence was designed by his partner Michael S. Smith, who was chosen by President and Michelle Obama in 2008 to redecorate the living quarters of the White House and the Oval Office.
Nearly 100 friends arrived for the weekend, which started with a reception at the US Embassy.
Saturday night, Smith celebrated his 50th birthday at a black-tie dinner at the Madrid Ritz with video greetings from the Obamas. Broadway’s Vanessa Williams sang a spirited rendition of Diana Krall’s “Peel Me a Grape” dedicated to Smith.
Guests included Ambassador to Britain Matthew Barzun, George Stephanopoulos and wife Ali Wentworth, Net-a-Porter’s Natalie Massenet, MK and JB Pritzker, Architectural Digest’s Margaret Russell, art dealers Paul Kasmin and Angela Westwater, actress Peggy Lipton, Carolina Herrera Jr., Monique Lhuillier, Vogue’s Hamish Bowles and Vanity Fair’s James Reginato.
