Spacey’s first Shakespeare role: Playing Romeo at an LA mall

Kevin Spacey’s first time performing Shakespeare was at a shopping mall. The “House of Cards” star told WNYC Radio’s Anna Sale he played Romeo at the Woodland Hills shopping mall in Los Angeles.

“I think it was my very first paid job, I think I got $25 for doing a couple of Romeo monologues,” he said.

Spacey in 2003 moved to London to become creative director of the Old Vic theater and played Richard III in a 2011 world tour. He said the gigs prepared him for his deliciously evil “Cards” character Francis Underwood:

“Moving to London 11 years ago … all of the work I’ve been doing over this decade has gone into preparing me for ‘House of Cards.’ I’m a better actor today than I was when I moved to London a decade ago.”
