Salma Hayek’s brother crashes car, kills passenger

Salma Hayek’s little brother lost control of a sports car and veered into oncoming traffic, killing his passenger, Los Angeles police have confirmed.

Sami Hayek, 40, was driving east on Sunset Boulevard in Bel-Air when his wheels veered into westbound lanes at 4:50 a.m. Monday and smashed into a Toyota pickup truck, injuring the driver, authorities said.

Hayek’s 43-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man who was killed in the crash was identified as Grammy Award-winning art director Ian Cuttler Sala, 43. The LA County coroner’s office is examining Sala’s body Tuesday to determine the exact cause of his death, according to reports. The coroner’s office did not initially release Sala’s identity on Monday until his family could be notified. Sala’s parents have been contacted and are reportedly in Los Angeles from Mexico.

The driver of the 2011 Toyota Tacoma pickup was 20-year-old Los Angeles resident Alvin Gomez, who suffered a broken foot.

Hayek, a furniture designer, was driving a 2006 Ford GT. He broke his ribs and scratched his face in the fatal crash.

Both drivers were taken to UCLA Medical Center.

Police didn’t immediately say if Hayek could be held criminally responsible.

His famous sister, 47-year-old “Frida” star Salma, was photographed last year driving a similar Ford GT.

It is not known whether the vehicle Sami drove on Monday morning was owned by him, or possibly by Salma.

Reps for Salma didn’t return messages.
