Babe Ruth’s original contract with the Yankees is up for sale for $1.45 million, and signing the Bambino from the Red Sox was a lot cheaper than getting Jacoby Ellsbury for $153 million.

According to the contract, Ruth earned $8,666.66 per month, or $52,000 per season, from 1922 to 1924, but had to put down a $30 deposit each year for “two complete uniforms, exclusive of shoes.”

Perks included “Pullman accommodations and meals en route” on the road. And while there’s no mention of performance-enhancing drugs, the contract demanded Ruth “refrain entirely from the use of all intoxicating liquors,” and not “stay up later than 1 o’clock a.m.” without permission.

The slugger was getting a huge raise, having made $3,500 in his first year with the Sox.

Antique docs dealer Moments in Time is offering that contract, too, for $1.25 million.
