Anthony Mason says NYC knows basketball

Anthony Mason — having played for six teams in 13 years in the NBA — appreciates New York fans for their basketball knowledge.

Mason says on “Four Courses With J.B. Smoove” (airing Tuesday after the Knicks/Kings game), “I’d go to away arenas, and somebody on the other team would club somebody, ref calls a foul, and the crowd would boo. In New York, it seemed like they knew the sport. ‘Aight, Mase, you did kind of throw him on his neck, but we love ya!’ They understood the game.”

The fans’ expertise worked both ways, said Mason, who had his best years with the Knicks.

“And that’s why they kill you when you’re doing something wrong: ‘Mase, you know you’re supposed to back-door there’” he recalls. “I’m like, ‘How do you know our plays?’ ”

Also on Smoove’s show: former Jet Bart Scott, ex-Ranger Anson Carter and actor Judah Friedlander.
