Group close to Vatican screens ‘anti-Catholic’ film ‘Philomena’

A select group close to the Vatican took in a screening of “Philomena” — a movie that’s been criticized by some as anti-Catholic — at Gstaad’s Alpina Hotel this week, spies told Page Six.

Starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, who co-wrote the screenplay for director Stephen Frears, the film tells the real-life story of Philomena Lee’s search for the son who was taken from her and sold for adoption by a church in Ireland in the 1950s.

A spy said the Vatican-connected guests “enjoyed the film,” and crusading Lee has been hoping to show it to Pope Francis himself.

Others at the private affair included Roman Polanski, Tabitha Simmons, Craig McDean, Ingrid Sischy and UK billionaire Bob Manoukian, who hosted an after-party at his home.
