Nobody beats the Sultan of Brunei when it comes to shopping. The oil-rich ruler was strolling past the Lederer shop on Madison Avenue at 58th Street Sunday night, when it was closed, and admired the handbags in the window. Next day, he bought 48 handbags and 24 of Lederer’s famous “duck” umbrellas. Owner Robert Blau said, “We’ve sold an occasional handbag out of the window, but never everything in the whole damn window.” The Sultan has seven daughters by his three wives, so maybe he was just doing some early Christmas shopping.
