Joan Rivers tells gay performers ‘stay in the closet’

Joan Rivers has advice for young gay performers: Stay in the closet! “If you’re going to be a romantic idol and try to get every teenage girl to love you, then you’d be an ass to come out and say you’re gay,” Rivers tells The Advocate. “Ricky Martin was so smart. He did what he did, made his millions and then he said, ‘Guess what, every body? I’m gay . . . It didn’t mat ter anymore because he didn’t have to bring in 16-year-old girls.” Rivers, who once played a lesbian in a show, said if she did it again, she’d pick daughter Melissa to play her love in terest, noting, “Let’s really make it good.” Or really weird.
