Author Jonathan Franzen grants thief mercy

Jonathan Franzen, the heralded author of best-selling novel “Freedom,” had his glasses snatched off his face at a London party and held for ransom. The thief’s accomplice actually gave him a note that read “$100,000 — Your glasses are yours again!” according to the Guardian. A police helicopter was sent out to track down the perp. When Scotland Yard’s finest, helped by a HarperCollins staffer, nabbed the eyewear-nappers, Fran zen, also the author of “The Corrections,” spared the thief a stint in corrections. Declining to press charges, he granted him “Freedom” instead. “Our deputy international sales director Damon Greeney was an absolute hero, and between him and the police they managed to find the glasses,” a HarperCol lins spokeswoman said.
