Katy Perry could be making a move to the big screen. The singer was approached by Harvey Weinstein at the Oscars to star in a “Billy Elliot”-style movie about British opera singer Paul Potts.

The mogul behind “The Artist” spoke to Perry about playing the wife of Potts — the English mobile-phone salesman who became a singing sensation after winning Simon Cowell’s “Britain’s Got Talent” in 2007.

Weinstein was spotted chatting with Perry, who responded, “I love a challenge,” at his pre-Oscar party at Soho House.

He later told us, “I was talking to Katy about a new project, a possible dramatic role in the Paul Potts movie, which will be shooting in England soon. We’d really like someone like Katy or Adele to play the role of Potts’ wife, and Katy seemed genuinely interested.”

The film, “One Chance,” will be directed by David Frankel, of “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Marley & Me.” Weinstein, whose company owns the rights to the movie, added they were in negotiations with a British actor to play the lead role of Potts.

The son of a bus driver who turned to singing when he was bullied as a child, Potts was a chubby Carphone Warehouse manager in Bristol when he won “Britain’s Got Talent” with his performance of “Nessun Dorma.”

Following his win, he performed for Queen Elizabeth and recorded the album “One Chance,” which topped the charts in nine countries. He was said to be worth about $8 million in 2009.

Potts is married to Julie-Ann Cooper, whom he met on the Internet in 2001 and wed within a year. He credits her for sticking by him through years of debt as he pursued his dream of becoming an opera singer.

If Perry takes the role, she’d have to undergo a transformation to play curvy Julie-Ann and work on a British accent (although sources say she does a mean impression of her soon-to-be ex-husband, Russell Brand).
