M2 nightclub could reach deal with Health Department over smoking

The Health Department’s campaign to close New York’s biggest club, M2, over smoking violations suffered a blow after employees insisted they had made a “good-faith effort” to stop cigarette smoking inside the Chelsea spot. The case was heard by a judge last week and will resume on Thursday. Sources say Health Department officials are scrambling to make a deal with M2 chiefs, including owner Joey Morrissey, over fears the judge will rule against them. A source told us: “It is expected a deal will be done to save face for the Health Department so they don’t suffer a ruling against them. The deal would allow clubs to hire officials from the department or the police to patrol and write tickets to the offenders.” Other clubs, including The Box, have been cited for similar violations and are also threatened.
