Art stars, gallerists and collectors will all flock to Randall’s Island on Thursday, when UK art fair Frieze kicks off a VIP preview of its second annual New York edition. For those who prefer their art with a stiff drink, this year the fair’s bringing with it perhaps the city’s most exclusive speakeasy as an installation through Monday: Artist Liz Glynn is creating a bar that’s only “accessible through a secret door,” where bartenders will perform magic tricks while serving cocktails, according to organizers. Decorated like a bank vault, the bar fits 100, and Frieze attendees will be slipped keys to the pop-up hot spot at random for access. The fair’s also commissioned artist Maria Loboda to create a garden on the island that’s a replica of a 19th-century illustration complete with its own signature fragrance. (Don’t look for it in department stores — the ingredients are so expensive, we’re told, it can’t be made commercially.) The fair this year is hosting 180 galleries, plus an 80-foot inflatable sculpture by Paul McCarthy and food from restaurants including Marlow & Sons, Mission Chinese, Frankies Spuntino, Sant Ambroeus, the Fat Radish and others. In Manhattan, Frieze-centric bashes will include MoMA PS1’s launch party tomorrow featuring Mykki Blanco and the Tate Americas Foundation Artists Dinner at Skylight at Moynihan Station with honorary chairs Sarah Jessica Parker and Glenda Bailey and artists including Jeff Koons, Marina Abramovic, Jenny Holzer, Alex Katz, Glenn Ligon, Tony Oursler and Richard Phillips. On Thursday night, the megacollector Maria Baibakova is hosting a private bash for Artspace, where guests will receive a limited- edition collaborative work by Rashid Johnson and his wife, Sheree Housepian.
