David O. Russell credits his son as the reason he made “Silver Linings Playbook,” starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, about adults with mental-health issues that’s getting awards-season buzz. “I had struggled, as his mother had, with helping him his whole life,” Russell told us of his son, who suffers from bipolar disorder, during an event for the film at Le Cirque. “There’s nothing you want more as a parent than to let your son feel it’s gonna be OK and they can be part of the world. I was always on the lookout for a story that could do that. Many people have come to me and told me they have a member of their family [with problems]. Many movie stars and people outside the business have said thank you.”
