‘Orphans’ closes a month early

You have to wonder what Shia LaBeouf is thinking. “Orphans” will close on Broadway a month before it was scheduled to end, producers have said.

The production, which earned two Tony nominations for Best Revival of a Play and for Tom Sturridge as Best Actor, will have its final performance on Sunday, May 19. “Orphans” had originally been scheduled to run through June 30.

The drama was marked by the highly publicized off-stage conflict between LaBeouf, Alec Baldwin and director Daniel Sullivan before it even began its run. “Orphans” was originally scheduled to begin on March 19 but was postponed following the announcement that Ben Foster was replacing LaBeouf.

The “Transformers” star left the play in February due to “creative differences.” LaBeouf announced his abrupt exit when he posted screenshots of his e-mail correspondence with Baldwin, Sullivan and playwright Lyle Kessler.

LaBeouf has since buried his beef with the cast and also attended a March show. Upon news of the production ending, he retweeted a message, “@OrphansonBway will play its final performance on May 19th. That leaves only 16 more chances to see this incredible production.”

The Hollywood Reporter writes that the play closed early due to “tepid” ticket sales. “While box office data for last week is not yet available, ‘Orphans’ played to 70 percent capacity at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre the previous week, grossing under $500,000.”
