Justin Bieber sent tongues wagging when he wore overalls to accept the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal from Canadian Prime Minster Stephen Harper. Gawker even dubbed him “White Trash Prince.”

After much backlash, the Biebs felt it necessary to defend his sartorial choice, saying it was down to circumstance. “The pic of me and the Prime Minister was taken in a room in the arena where i was performing at that day,” wrote Bieber (via Us Weekly). “I walked straight from my meet and greet to him, if you … expect me to have a change of clothes let a loan [sic] a suit at that specific time that’s crazy, It wasn’t like it was like I was going into his environment we were at a hockey arena.”

He concluded: “Wow am i ever white trash.” He then posted a shirtless photograph of himself Instagram with his overalls down that revealed his boxers.

Last week, the singer donned overalls, a backwards cap, a long silver chain and bright neon yellow sneakers to accept the medal given to Canadians who earn achievements abroad. Harper, in a full suit, clearly contrasted Bieber during the Canadian national ceremony.

Harper defended overall-gate via his official Twitter: “In fairness to @justinbieber, I told him I would be wearing my overalls too. #cdnpoli #beliebers”
