Major art-world loss: daughter of Willem de Kooning dies

Johanna Liesbeth de Kooning — the philanthropist and sculptor who preserved the legacy of her artist father Willem de Kooning — was mysteriously found dead at her home on the US Virgin Island of St. John last week. Johanna, 56, known as Lisa, was found in the early hours of Friday after reportedly drinking wine and falling. The major crimes division is investigating. She was de Kooning’s only child, and is survived by three children: Isabel, Emma and Lucy de Kooning Villeneuve. In a statement, gallerist Marc Glimcher said, “Lisa expertly and lovingly spearheaded the preservation and promotion of the legacy of her father . . . She raised three beautiful daughters and was a friend to so many people.”
