Scientology hiring journalists

Investigative reporters looking for a break into the magazine business can now send resumes to Scientology’s own glossy, Freedom.

Freedom covers “human rights, social betterment issues and does investigative reporting in the public interest,” according to a recent job posting first noticed by TheWrap.com.

Indeed there’s an opening listed on JournalismJobs.com that says the magazine is looking for experienced investigative reporters for a freelance gig based Los Angeles.

Freedom has been published by the Church of Scientology since 1968. While the publication claims to publish content on “human rights” and “social betterment,” the handful of articles on their Web site criticize high-profile ex-Scientologists who have questioned the church’s practices.

Former Scientology Inspector General Marty Rathbun, for example, is accused of “malfeasance.” Ex chief spokesman Mike Rinder is a “walking hate crime.” Former member Amy Scobee is accused of peddling “salacious drivel” and is pictured in unflattering swimwear.

There are also media “exposes” on CNN, The New Yorker, and the BBC.

This isn’t the first time Scientology sought journalists. Scientology blogger Tony Ortega noticed another job posting in July 2011, and that they hired reporters to go after the St. Petersburg Times after it published an expose on the church in 2009.
