Jimmy Fallon’s ‘SNL’ stint prepped him for ‘Tonight’ move

He may be all wet, but Jimmy Fallon won’t be a fish out of water when he brings the “Tonight Show” from Los Angeles to New York.

Fallon, 39, who made it big here on “Saturday Night Live,” tells February’s Vanity Fair that when he was young, he’d watch “SNL” by himself to absorb every word — all while chugging beer with the approval of his Mom and Dad. “As long as I wasn’t doing anything at night, I’d just sit by myself and I would have a six-pack of Pabst,” he says.

“I wanted to see the sketches, the new characters, what the angle was.”

This obsession with the legendary sketch comedy series paid off when he earned a spot on the show at the young age of 24.

“I was there in the room that day,” former “SNL” writer Tina Fey tells the magazine. “He’s one of two people I’ve ever seen who was completely ready to be on the show. Kristen Wiig is the other one…. And Jimmy was ready — like, if there had been a show to do that night.”

Fallon also talks about his close relationship with “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels.

“Lorne helped me with everything—with relationships, with me getting famous,” Fallon says. “I was going through certain steps, and there were certain things I couldn’t talk to my dad about, because he wouldn’t know.”

In addition to car and dating advice, it was Michaels who broached the idea of Fallon succeeding Conan O’Brien as the host of “Late Night” in 2009, after a few-year stint in Hollywood hadn’t gone as planned.

Fallon takes the reins of “Tonight” from Jay Leno on Feb. 17.
