Halle Berry knows the pain of residents of the Los Angeles battered-women’s shelter where she’s a volunteer. “I saw my mother battered, and could not do anything to stop it,” she told the Sunday Times of London. “My father was tyrannical, lashing out at her for no reason. I felt the effects that had on our family.” Berry, 43, has been a low-key night-shift volunteer at the Jenesse Center for years, and hopes speaking up will help Jenesse’s six shelters overcome financial stresses brought on by the slack economy. A former shelter resident said she had no idea the woman she called Halle Baby and who told silly jokes to her children was a movie star.
