Short-lived yet legendary club will celebrate 30th anniversary

AREA — the short-lived but legendary 1980s club favored by artists including Andy Warhol — on Tuesday will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its opening. Kathy Grayson’s gallery The Hole will launch a show of work made for the club that famously adopted a new theme every few weeks by Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Julian Schnabel and others.

Pictures from top photographers including Wolfgang Wesener will also be displayed at the exhibition that runs through next Sunday by curators including Jeffrey Deitch, Serge Becker and Glenn O’Brien.

A Bowery Hotel after-party will serve as a book launch for “Area 1983-1987” by Area and hotel co-owner Eric Goode and his sister Jennifer, with expected guests Jean Pigozzi, Chuck Close, Ryan McGinness and Tony Shafrazi.
