Robert Knight, who recorded the first version of the hit song “Everlasting Love,” died Sunday after a short illness, The Tennessean reported Monday. He was 72.

Over the past 50 years, Knight’s “Everlasting Love” was covered by Carl Carlton, Love Affair, U2 and Gloria Estefan, among others. After leaving music, Knight worked as a lab technician at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

Knight was featured in the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s exhibit “Night Train to Nashville: Music City Rhythm and Blues,” which opened in 2004 and ran for over a year.

Funeral arrangements are unknown at this time.
