MSNBC quietly cancels ‘Live With Thomas Roberts’

MSNBC on Friday quietly pulled the plug on its afternoon show, “Live With Thomas Roberts,” after less than two years, Page Six has exclusively learned. Roberts was brought on to do the two-hour show last year to replace the much-hyped but low-rated “Ronan Farrow Daily.”

“Thomas was taken off of his [show] quietly,” said a news insider. “They’re not going to announce it, but he’s gone. His last day was Friday.”

Another source close to the anchor explained, “Thomas is in discussions to take on a new role with MSNBC in 2017.”

The ill-fated time slot will now transition to a “rotation of anchors” at the network.

Page Six exclusively reported that after Farrow’s show was axed, he was moved to a role as an investigative reporter, but his desk and cubicle were still on-camera during Roberts’ show.

Viewers could oddly see Farrow working just over the shoulder of replacement Roberts, as well as other anchors during the day. A source said: “Poor guy. He does nothing . . . He just sits at a desk.”

But Farrow will get a crack at being back on camera over the holidays. After our story, he announced that he’ll temporarily fill in for Carson Daly on “Today.”

“Ladies & gents, I’ll be hosting @todayshow #orangeroom during the holiday,” Farrow shared with his nearly 30,000 followers on Instagram. The “Orange Room” is Daly’s “digital studio” on the morning show.

We also hear several NBC News staffers consoled and cheered up a somber Farrow after we reported how he was pushed from the anchor desk to the cubicle behind the anchor desk. Farrow also tweeted a Variety article from November with the headline “Ronan Farrow Hones Second Act for NBC News.”

A source told us, “His pieces get heavy promotion on ‘Today.’ Not one has made news, but he gets major billing when he’s on. He’s lucky.”

A “Today” source added: “Everyone at the ‘Today’ show is really happy with Ronan’s investigative pieces and supportive of the series. He’s a hard worker and does a great job.”
