A member of the real-life Bling Ring hopes the courts can help her escape her past.

Courtney Ames, who was the basis for one of the characters in the 2013 Sofia Coppola movie of the same name, is attempting to legally change her name, reports TMZ.

In the filing, Ames claims she wants to change her last name to Shields because her stepfather, boxer Randy Shields, is more of a parental figure than her own dad.

As the website points out, the move would also allow her to disassociate herself with the group of young thieves who victimized a number of celebrities, including Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton, between the fall of 2008 and the summer of 2009.

In 2012, Ames was sentenced to three years of probation and two months of community service as a result of her involvement with the group.

A judge is set to decide on her request for a name change next month.
