When “Mad Men” star Jessica Paré attended a reading in LA of cult classic “Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk,” she told authors Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain she’d be willing to read for a role in the movie version by “American Psycho” director Mary Harron.
The writers were surprised since Harron’s version of their tome died on the vine years before.
McCain said of Harron’s screenplay in a 2011 interview, “It was appalling. It wasn’t terribly written, but it was like an after-school special.”
And the writers’ relationship with Universal during the project was “always animosity, like it was a duel or something . . . It was very weird and very upsetting.”
They pulled the plug after 10 years in development hell.
We think Paré would make a mean Exene Cervenka in a new version.
Also at the Book Soup reading hosted by Michael Des Barres were Paré’s boyfriend John Kastner, the Standells’ Larry Tamblyn and D Generation’s Howie Pyro.
McNeil and McCain signed copies of new book “Dear Nobody: The True Diary of Mary Rose” for Jessica.
