James Toback’s forgotten memorabilia put on auction block

Movie director James Toback doesn’t care about the stuff he put into a locker at Chelsea Mini Storage 20 years ago when he moved into a new apartment.

When I told him his possessions had been auctioned off on Wednesday because he had failed to pay the bill for a number of months, Toback said, “If anyone paid more than $50 [for the stuff], they will be very disappointed.”

The director of “Tyson,” “Harvard Man” and “Two Girls and a Guy” said the contents were just press clippings, notebooks and worthless papers.

“I have two closets full of my archives. I am very reluctant to get rid of anything after what I went through when I went to Harvard,” said Toback, who gave away his collection of baseball cards and autographed balls from Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle.

“I probably had about $500,000 of sports memorabilia.”

Toback, whose name appeared on a legal notice in the New York Post, said he had periodically paid the storage bill, but hadn’t opened the locker in 20 years.
