For a while, the worst thing Justin Bieber did was spread Bieber Fever. But that didn’t last long: In 2012, he was busted for reckless driving; in 2013 he was accused of vandalism in Brazil. On Jan. 9, 2014, one of Bieber’s Calabasas, California, neighbors accused the singer of egging his home. (Bieber pleaded no contest and was sentenced to probation, an $80,900 fine, 12 days of anger management and five days of community service.) Weeks later, he was arrested in Miami under suspicion of DUI, admitting to authorities that he drank, smoked marijuana and popped Xanax. And then, most recently, on Jan. 29, Bieber turned himself in to Toronto police for allegedly assaulting a limo driver.

Five days before Leif Garrett turned 18, he crashed his car and rendered his friend Roland Winkler paraplegic. Winkler’s family sued Garrett for $25 million for gross negligence; they settled out of court for $7.1 million. That was only the start of the onetime teen idol’s troubles: In 1999, he was arrested for buying narcotics from a narc; in 2006 he was arrested for not having a subway ticket and drug possession. Then in February 2010, he was arrested for having black tar heroin in his shoe. He’d go on to appear on “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew” later that year.

After a huge string of commercials, a stint on “Another World” and “The Parent Trap,” Lindsay Lohan burst into the Hollywood mainstream in 2004 with “Mean Girls.” Since then, by the numbers: Lilo has appeared in court 20 times, seen four different judges who have found her in violation of her probation and was incarcerated for less than two weeks in her six separate trips to the Los Angeles County jail. Fast-forward about a decade, and LaBeouf got quite messy: In 2007, LaBeouf was arrested for refusing to leave a Walgreens. In 2008, he got a DUI, then was handcuffed (but not arrested) for a bar fight in 2011. In 2014, he began wearing paper bags on his head, plagiarizing apologies for his previous plagiarism and even getting arrested yet again for disorderly conduct and trespassing. Tatum O’Neal won an Oscar at 10 years old, and it was all downhill from there. O’Neal claimed to have been molested by her father Ryan O’Neal’s drug dealer at 12, as well as alleging physical and emotional abuse from her father himself. She publicly dated Michael Jackson in the late 1970s, later denying his accusations that she tried to seduce him. She married temperamental tennis ace John McEnroe in 1986. They divorced in 1994, which reportedly triggered another bout of O’Neal’s heroin addiction, leading McEnroe to obtain custody of their children in 1998. A decade later, O’Neal was arrested for buying crack cocaine near her New York apartment. She pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and was sentenced to rehab.

Amanda Bynes went from an apple-cheeked comedy prodigy on Nickelodeon’s “All That” and “The Amanda Show” to a stunning, seemingly well-adjusted adult, starring in “What I Like About You” and a series of movies like “She’s the Man.” Unfortunately, though, Bynes wasn’t well: She faced several DUI and hit-and-run incidents in 2012, as well as some questionable tweets about Drake. In May 2013, she was arrested for marijuana possession, attempted tampering with evidence and reckless endangerment when she threw a bong out her New York apartment window. In July 2013, Bynes lit a fire in a stranger’s driveway and was placed under a 5150 psychiatric hold. She was placed under a temporary conservatorship and received psychiatric care from UCLA Medical Center before being transferred to a private facility.

Selena Gomez successfully maintained her carefully crafted “Anti-Miley” image until recently: The on-again off-again girlfriend of fellow troubled star Justin Bieber secretly entered rehab in January 2014, though her reps adamantly deny it’s for substance abuse. Still, rumors of the singer’s boozing and drug use have run rampant ever since.
