Here’s a VMA moment Miley Cyrus can be proud of.

Instead of twerking her way up the stage to accept her Video of The Year award, Cyrus, 21, sent a homeless teen named Jesse to accept the Moonman on her behalf.

“I am accepting this award on behalf of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the United States who are starving, lost and scared for their lives right now,” he said. “I know this because I am one of these people. I’ve survived in shelters all over the city. I’ve cleaned your hotel rooms, I’ve been an extra in your movies. I’ve been an extra in your life.”

The camera then panned to Cyrus who was crying during the speech.

“Though I may have been invisible to you on the streets, I have a lot of the same dreams that brought many of you here tonight,” he continued before directing fans to the singer’s Facebook page. “A dream you dream alone is only a dream, but a dream you dream together is reality.”

Cyrus won the award for her infamous, Terry Richardson-directed video for the single “Wrecking Ball.”

Last year, Cyrus drew criticism for her provocative performance with Robin Thicke.
