At the MTV Video Music Awards, the famous moon man trophies matter half as much as what hits the red carpet, which — being less stuffy than the Grammys and Oscars — is a veritable fashion free-for-all.
This year was no exception. From the good to the bad to the all-around wacky, here are some things we noticed:
The good:
The Kardashians killed it
Save it, haters! They koordinated and it worked. To remind us the she’s the model one, Kendall donned a black Alon Livne mesh top and trousers that accentuated her teeny waist and super long legs. Kylie matched with a silky black bath robe. And no garment put in more work than Kim’s gravity-defying Balmain mini.
Pared-down Nicki Minaj looked wild
Pre-performance gyration, Minaj wowed in an “Anaconda”-referencing snakeskin Saint Laurent shift, finished with nude Saint Laurent pumps and simple hair and makeup.
Sarah Hyland did cutouts the classy way
In a night of copious, near-gratuitous strategically-sliced designs (ahem, J.Lo…), the actress sported a sultry asymmetrical Kaufmanfranco gown slit in all the right places.
Solange wore H&M
And she looked phenomenal. The singer also seemed significantly more comfortable than her sister.
Beyoncé, being Beyoncé, slayed in Nicolas Jebran
Any questions?
The bad:
Charli XCX for Cartoon Network
Anyone old enough for a “Josie and the Pussy Cats” reference? No? Well the jumpsuit is tacky. There.
Granny Grace Moretz
Chloe Grace Moretz was undoubtedly the most mature person at Sunday night’s ceremony, and she chose to dress as such.
The joke’s on Katy Perry
We get it, it’s Britney, bitch! Too bad Perry isn’t circa-2001-Britney cute enough to transcend the tragedy that is this look.
Taylor Swift’s onesie
No, girl.
Victoria Justice #fail
There’s a special place in hell for mullet dresses.
