Solange’s Jay Z attack latest in string of erratic events

Solange’s violent attack on Jay Z appears to be the latest episode of erratic behavior from the DJ and singer who canceled her European tour dates for August 2013, citing “mental/physical health.”

“I wish I could put in words how much of a difficult decision this was,” the singer, 27, wrote on her website after relocating to Brooklyn from Los Angeles with her son Daniel Julez, “but between moving part time to a new city, starting my son in a new school, and writing/recording my new record … I really had to make the best decision for my mental/physical health and provide some stability for my family.”

Solange has made no secret of her marijuana use in the past. In 2008, she released an ode to Mary Jane called “Champagne Chronic Nightcap.” When asked whether the descriptions of lighting up in the song were true to life, she told a reporter, “I am unapologetic. I don’t write about things unless they’re true!”

In February 2009, she tweeted about ending up in the hospital after a NyQuil overdose, then later that year, she said she was concerned her drug use was taking a toll on her mind. “I don’t even smoke weed that often but I’m finding that I can’t remember things,” she tweeted on Sept. 1, 2009. “Gotta be something else.”

In 2011, she was even less ashamed of her habit: “Is weed taboo in NYC?” she asked her Twitter followers. “Like, why can’t I ever find any?”

Before the brawl, Jay Z and Beyoncé had arrived together for the after-party at the Standard Hotel, and sat together in a secluded booth in a quiet corner of the Boom Boom Room.

Solange arrived shortly after with a group that included designer Riccardo Tisci, Naomi Campbell and Erykah Badu, and headed to Jay Z and Beyoncé’s table.

Solange was not seen drinking, but did appear a little worse for wear in some pictures posted on Instagram.
