Gary Oldman misses NY premiere of ‘Planet of the Apes’

Gary Oldman, who recently had a controversial interview in Playboy, flew into New York for Tuesday’s Fox premiere of “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” but had a family emergency and had to fly out Tuesday morning, missing the movie’s big screening and several planned TV appearances.

Andy Serkis, who plays lead chimp Caesar, attended, telling us he watched ape videos to get the movements down.

“Apart from that, I also studied apes in the wild and also captivity,” he said at the Cinema Society screening at Williamsburg Cinemas. “You have to go to some lengths to actually understand them. Once you start researching apes you realize how very, very close they are to us. Not just because they’re 97 percent genetically the same, but because they all have personalities, they all have moods, they all have good days and bad days . . . So actually you sort of learn more about humanity, which is the purpose of these films.”

After, guests including Darren Aronofsky, Paul Haggis and the movie’s star Keri Russell partied at the Sheltering Sky rooftop bar at McCarren Hotel.
