Len Blavatnik buys Damien Hirst work for $15M at amfAR gala

At the star-studded amfAR Cinema Against AIDS gala in Cannes Wednesday night, one golden presence stood out from the rest — artist Damien Hirst’s gilded woolly mammoth skeleton, titled “Gone But Not Forgotten.”

Hirst donated the piece for auction, and it was one of the most talked-about (and photographed) items of the evening.

At the start of the night, onstage with Harvey Weinstein, gala co-chair Heidi Klum cracked, “If no one can afford to buy the Damien Hirst sculpture on their own, maybe we all chip in and each get a bone?”

In the end, the mammoth went to billionaire Len Blavatnik for $15 million (11 million euros). And a trip to space with Leo DiCaprio went for $1.2 million (900,000 euros).
