Helen Mirren‘s tip for looking great at 68: Cut your own hair.

The “Queen” star confirmed longstanding rumors that she, not a beautician, trims her silver locks in an interview in the August issue of Redbook.

“Not always, but yes, I can’t handle going to the hairdresser every six weeks, so I only go about once a year,” said the actress, who turns 69 later this month. “In between, I get out the scissors and do something, usually rather disastrously.”

Mirren added that she’ll give herself a little trim before big events, like the Oscars or movie premieres.

“Sometimes I’ll even chop my hair the morning of a big red carpet event,” she said.

She’ll get another chance to show off her scissor skills at the premiere of her upcoming film, “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” next month.

The movie arrives in theaters on Aug. 8.
