Campaign against Hamptons lawn fertilizer continues as toxic algae found

The campaign to prevent Hamptons residents from using fertilizers and pesticides on their green lawns is stepping up after elevated levels of toxic blue-green algae were found last month in Georgica Pond.

Landscape designer Edwina von Gal, who heads up the Perfect Earth Project, said, “The tradition for cutting lawns short… increases the need for fertilizer and contributes to runoff… Pesticides are not only harmful to predators who live in the water, they poison fish and seafood, [and are] also dangerous for children and pets.”

The project is throwing a benefit picnic at artist Cindy Sherman’s home on Aug. 30, with performances by Roger Waters and support from Calvin Klein, Blythe Danner and Rufus Wainwright.
