Texas Gov. Rick Perry has come under fire after comparing homosexuality to alcoholism.
Perry reportedly said during an appearance in San Francisco, “I may have the genetic coding that I’m inclined to be an alcoholic, but I have the desire not to do that — and I look at the homosexual issue the same way.”
Thursday, Perry attended a Fort Hood ceremony at a clinic for the National Intrepid Center of Excellence, which helps military members with traumatic brain injuries and psychological conditions.
Bill White, the openly gay former president of the Intrepid Museum, who has worked to fund the NICoE program, blasted Perry as “stupid.”
White said, “I am so insulted to be compared to an alcoholic.” He continued, “You could argue he is ignorant, but Rick Perry sounds stupid. It breaks my heart that we have come so far while Perry — a guy presumed to be running for president — wants to take us backward.”
White added, “I was a lifelong Republican, but I have switched parties because I was fed up with being personally insulted.”
