Katy Perry is no stranger to celebrity relationships, but she’s also tried her hand at dating normals. Unfortunately, that hasn’t worked any better.
“I’ve done that before,” the “Birthday” singer, 29, recently told Rolling Stone.
The main reason she thinks those relationships haven’t fared better than highly scrutinized flameouts with Russell Brand and John Mayer is because it’s hard to be with someone who doesn’t know what it’s like to be in the limelight.
“It’s not that they have to be famous, although there’s a level of understanding when they’re in the same business, you know?” she said. “They understand what it means when you’re tired from a show or the tour’s exhausting you or if an interview went wrong — they know all the ins and outs, so you can just walk into the house with a certain face and they understand, you know?”
While she’s found it less complicated to date the rich and the famous, the pop star’s main criteria doesn’t have anything to do with all of that. What’s most important is that they love music.
“And what I really like is someone that understands music, because I love music. So anybody that understands the power of music, I’m usually instantly attracted to,” she said.
Fortunately for Perry, Diplo, the latest man she’s been linked to, seems to fit that criteria.
