Woman buys $200 box of junk, winds up with $60K Warhol

You never know what you might find on Craigslist.

One buyer bought a box of junk for $200 and ended up with an Andy Warhol worth more than $60,000.

The Warhol screen print of a man’s genitalia was bought by accident after a clueless seller sold a couch through the site and threw in a box of junk that happened to contain the artwork. A New Jersey woman was the lucky buyer who decided to pick up the box while collecting the couch, all for $200, on the Lower East Side.

She discovered the pricey Warhol full-monty piece when she got home. While the woman has asked not to be named, we’re told she knew she’d come across a treasure because the work is signed on the back and stamped and numbered by the Warhol Foundation.

The piece is now up for sale on auction site Paddle8 with the bidding up to $60,000. Bidding closes on Wednesday.

The Paddle8 Web site says the work is part of Warhol’s “Torsos” series, which first came about when a man boasted about his endowment to the artist, who eagerly photographed it.

The tamer images were meant to be exhibited in museums, and debuted at the Grand Palais in Paris in October 1977. The more sexually charged works were produced as the “Sex Parts” print portfolio and were intended for private collectors.

Longtime Warhol assistant Ronnie Cutrone was quoted as saying that the reason for their creation was as a tool for Warhol’s ultimate acceptance of his sexuality.
