George Clooney‘s dad is happy is his notoriously commitment-shy son is finally settling down.

“We are very pleased,” broadcaster Nick Clooney told E! News. “We like Amal and we are very excited for our family and thrilled for them.”

News broke Saturday that Clooney, and his girlfriend of seven months, British humanitarian lawyer Amal Alamuddin, were engaged.

“They are both wonderful people and hope they have a terrific life ahead of them,” the 80-year-old said about his son and soon-to-be daughter-in-law. “This is their day. This is George and Amal’s time.”

The news of the engagement came as a shock to many, as Clooney has made a habit of dating actresses, models and, most recently, a professional wrestler. He was also married to actress Talia Balsam from 1989 to 1993.

Like Clooney, Alamuddin has TV news in her roots. Her mother, Baria Alamuddin, is a regular TV news analyst, offering insight on Middle Eastern affairs for CNN, Al Jazeera, CNBC, BBC and Sky News.
