Chelsea Clinton: kids better not be Republicans

A pregnant Chelsea Clinton revealed her hopes for her children at Town & Country’s Philanthropy Summit Wednesday, joking they’d better not be Republicans.

Noting parents Bill and Hillary’s influence on her own life, she said, “We had dinner together every night…even when my father ran for president in 1992, back when campaigns were only 13 months,” she told the crowd at Hearst Tower. “There were only three nights in those 13 months that I wasn’t with one or both my parents at night, which was a tremendous sacrifice on their part.”

Chelsea, who said she was debating her mom and dad at age 6, continued, “I hope to imbue our children with that same kind of sense that it’s important to have an opinion…and to be able to defend it.”

She added, “If they want to make an artistic contribution to the world, that will make me equally as happy as if they want to make a philanthropic or political one.”

When asked by T&C editor Jay Fielden, “What if you have a Republican?”

Chelsea cracked, “I would find that very hard to believe.”
