“Misery” star James Caan recalled at a Film Society of Lincoln Center tribute to the movie’s director, Rob Reiner, on Monday that the actor was once so hung over, he offered to pay for a lost day of filming.

“Kathy [Bates] just loved to rehearse. Me, not so much,” Caan joked at the Chaplin Award gala, where Michael Douglas, Tom Cruise, Martin Scorsese, Morgan Freeman and others saluted Reiner.

He added that after a night of heavy drinking in 1990, Reiner said Caan would have to reshoot his scenes because of “a problem at the lab.”

Caan later learned the real reason for the do-over, and felt so bad he offered to write Reiner’s Castle Rock Entertainment a check to cover the costs. Reiner refused.

“Kathy [won] an Academy Award. So I’m thinking . . . maybe I should rehearse,” Caan quipped. Or drink less.
