The crackdown on New York City nightlife sparked by would-be suburbanites who want peace and quiet once the sun goes down could have a devastating effect on the city’s economy. In Paris, where the bourgeoisie were invented, 10,000 people have signed a petition to be submitted soon to the Culture Ministry warning that the French capital’s once- fabled music and nightlife industry is in a state of decline and it’s urgent that something be done about it. Our man in Paris loosely translated the manifesto as saying that music places have been hit hard during the past decade because of a trend toward “tranquility” by the locals. A rise in street muggings and a ban on smoking are also keeping people home. Said our correspondent, “The City of Light is being transformed into the Capital of Sleep.”
